About 16 kms from Palampur is the ancient and most remarkable monument of Himachal Pradesh - the baijnath temple. The ancient temple of Lord Shiva consists of an ''Adytum'' surrounded by a spire of the usual conical shape with a ''Mandap'' covered with a low pyramid shaped roof. The ''Adytum'' contains the Lingam. Part of the twelve jyotirlingas Baijnath is believed to be the place where Ravana worshipped Lord Shiva and gained immortality.
